National Cyber Security Centre Software Engineer

 Expressions of interest are invited for an Applications Engineer within the Information Assurance and Cyber Security Directorate (IACD) of the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB), based in Wellington.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is an integral part of the GCSB. We are an engineering team responsible for the design, development, implementation and management of all aspects of our capability that underpins our internal platforms.

We are looking for someone with a strong design/engineering background, to continue the work achieved to date but also evolve our systems in line with the dynamic technology and security threat landscape.

This role allows for a high degree of autonomy, flexibility and agility. You will be designing and implementing solutions that meet required organisational outcomes and delivering operational capabilities to our stakeholders across government and the private sector, both nationally and internationally.

The existing team is a highly capable and experienced group with a great can-do culture - willing to try new things and push the boundaries.

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate your experience, passion and enthusiasm for Engineering and Information Security.

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • The ability to use or learn about a wide variety of Open Source technologies
  • Intermediary to Advanced level experience in multiple programming languages; Python, Java, JavaScript and C++
  • Experience working in Continuous Integration environments
  • Experience with Docker
  • Experience Developing for Linux

In addition to the technical experience, you will also have:

  • Enthusiasm for solving complex problems
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to create concise and effective technical documentation

  • an information and records management role in a complex business and customer focused environment, and

  • Providing system support and advice to users to enable smart use of Electronic Information Management (ECM) tools.

In this newly established role, you will ensure oversight and confidence in the safety and security of all NZSIS intelligence gathering operations. You will provide operational security advice across the full range of NZSIS operational and risk management activity.

To be successful in this role you will have knowledge and experience in the following areas:

  • Significant operational experience, preferably in intelligence gathering operations
  • An ability to identify, research, and understand technology borne risks to the NZSIS and its operational activity
  • Provide best practice security and risk management advice
  • The ability to use influence and persuasion to achieve sound operational outcomes

As our Senior IT Engineer you will be responsible for leading, supporting, enhancing and designing the infrastructure behind our specialised SIEM analysis platform.  You will have a direct hand in the research and development required to ensure that our infrastructure continues to scale with the growing demands of the Protective Monitoring Centre (PMC).
