We welcome diversity

Our work is secret, but the reason for our success isn’t. It’s our people. And we’re just like you. We’re ordinary people. But together we’re doing Beyond Ordinary things to protect New Zealand and New Zealanders.

While we’re ordinary people, we’re not all the same. We welcome diversity, in all its forms, in fact we consider it a strength.

For us, diversity is not a nice to have  but a need to have. We have a vital mission to protect New Zealand’s national security and to do this we need to reflect the community we serve.

We simply could not do our job without having a range of ideas, perspectives and backgrounds at the table.

But diversity is not much good if the people who work here don’t feel part of the team. That’s why we work hard to create a workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging and our people feel safe to bring their whole selves to work.


How do we do this?

We launched our Diversity and Inclusion Strategy in 2017 and it has guided our work ever since. We’ve recently given our Diversity and Inclusion Strategy [PDF, 9.73 MB] a refresh too as we’re always looking to improve.

Our staff network groups are an important part of bringing our Strategy to life and they give voice to diversity in our Community. When you work for us you’re welcome to join one or more of our network groups.

We also have a range of training and guidance material in place to support our people.


Are we there yet?

Diversity and Inclusion is a journey for us. Our goal is he waka eke noa – a canoe that we are all in with no exception, and there is still more work to be done. But we know we’re on the right track.

We encourage diversity in all its forms but we’ve had a particular focus on attracting more women and ethnically diverse candidates to consider a career with us.

Our support of our Rainbow community has also been recently recognised. In 2019 we received a Rainbow Tick. The Rainbow Tick is a certification mark for organisations that complete a diversity and inclusion assessment process. We’re proud to show off our Rainbow Tick.

In 2020 we took home the Supreme Award at the annual Rainbow Excellence Awards. To win an award, means outstanding progress has been made in creating an inclusive workplace. For us, it is also a reflection of just how far we’ve come since we launched our diversity and Inclusion Strategy.
